Business management and planning

July 2026 | Presented by Graham Hope, Kiwi Crunch, New Zealand | Future Orchards® Winter Orchard Walks and Orchard Talks presentation and video

In this Future Orchards® presentation, Graham Hope of Kiwi Crunch reflects on five decades of horticultural experience and the challenges and opportunities that have shaped commercial fruit production over that period. The session draws on a career that has included large-scale management of apples as well as pears and stonefruit in New Zealand.

The presentation is valuable because it places current orchard decisions in a longer historical context. Production systems, labour availability, market requirements, technology and business expectations have all changed substantially over the past 50 years, but successful orchard businesses have repeatedly had to combine disciplined execution with the ability to adapt.

Graham’s long-term perspective is particularly relevant to owners and managers thinking about succession, management systems and the capability of their teams. Orchard performance depends not only on the technical production system but on whether important work is planned, communicated and completed consistently through the season.

The slides and video provide a practical reflection on managing change rather than a single technical recipe. For growers, the central value is in considering which management disciplines remain fundamental, which practices need to evolve, and how orchard businesses can position themselves to respond to the next set of industry challenges and opportunities.
