Biosecurity The apple and pear industry, like most in horticulture, face on-going biosecurity issues that challenge good business decision-making and profitability.

APAL continues to work closely with Plant Health Australia (PHA) to address plant health issues.

A major issue facing the industry is Fire blight. Fire blight is a serious disease of apples and pears and has the potential to cause wide spread damage for the industry. It is endemic to North America and has spread to many countries including Europe and New Zealand.

APAL has commenced a review of the Fire Blight Contingency Plan and addressed the need for categorisation of European Canker and apple leaf curling midge for the Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed.
