Support for
Growth

Creating a better future for Australian apple and pear growers,
through industry leadership and commercial advancement.

Levies

APAL does not collect levies.

However, APAL manages programs and services for the apple and pear industry that are largely funded through levies collected by the Australian Government and administered by Hort Innovation.

How the levy system works

Statutory levies are raised by growers and collected by the Australian Government.

The government passes these collected levies to Hort Innovation.

Hort Innovation then works with apple and pear growers to make strategic investments in R&D and marketing programs. Investment is guided by the Apple and Pear Strategic Investment Plan 2017 -2021 and decisions are made through consultation and advice from the industry, delivered through an industry-specific Strategic Investment Advisory Panel (SIAP).

The Australian Government contributes to the costs of R&D investments, but does not contribute to marketing programs.

Hort Innovation makes strategic investments designed to directly benefit growers in the apple and pear industry. Levies are invested into R&D activities, extension, marketing programs, residue testing, plant health programs, and pest management response programs. More information on Hort Innovation’s R&D activities for the apple and pear industry can be found here.

APAL delivers the following levy-funded programs:

Familiarise yourself with how Hort Innovation consults with industry, including the role of the Apple and Pear Strategic Investment Advisory Panel (SIAP) and who sits on it. If you wish to contribute more directly, you can apply to join the SIAP.

Use your peak body. APAL advocates on industry’s behalf, provides input into the strategic investment plan and participates in both the SIAP and the Strategic Marketing Panel guiding investment of the marketing levy.

If you have investment or other ideas about the process you wish to have raised on your behalf contact APAL.
