Future Orchards® Winter Series – July 2024

Industry events & webinars

Join us at APAL’s Future Orchards® Winter Series of orchard walks from 22–25 July.

This year’s theme is “Improve or remove: Diagnosing your financial performance”.

Representatives from APAL’s technical partner AgFirst will guide discussions on diagnosing block performance, identifying high and low performers, and strategies to enhance orchard profitability.

On the Southern Loop, Jonathan Brookes from AgFirst will be joined by Brent Reeve from Redland Premium Fruit who will detail their block viability analysis process and their block removal and replanting strategy for long-term economic sustainability.

On the Northern Loop, AgFirst’s Jack Wilson will be joined by Dr Nigel Cook, horticultural consultant for Prophyta in South Africa to discuss winter dormancy in apples/pears and the underlying process of induction, release and manipulation options to improve tree growth habit and performance.

This year brings some changes to the orchard walk format.

In each state, only one walk will be offered, with those from Southern Victoria asked to travel to the Goulburn Valley this winter (this will be reversed in November).

While this represents additional travel for participants, we envision that the time spent off farm exploring challenges in other regions with less familiar growers will present a great opportunity for vibrant discussion and sharing of techniques. Additionally, all guest speakers will be present at the Victorian event, with their talks recorded and uploaded to APAL’s YouTube after the event, enabling all growers who are unable to attend to listen to our guests.

Only one orchard walk will be offered in New South Wales – in Batlow – and those from Orange and Bilpin are asked to attend one of our other events or engage with the guest presentation recordings online once uploaded (to be communicated via Industry Juice).

We welcome all feedback on this change which will be undertaken in a trial format for the 2024–25 orchard walks.
