Thursday 11 November, Ranelagh, Tasmania

APAL’s Tas Orchard Walk, hosted by Scott Price and Andrew Smith of R&R Smith.

As well as a visit to the orchard, the on-site presentations will include:

  • Mapping, monitoring and interpretation of soil moisture and irrigation data (Marek Matuszek, Aglogic)
  • PIPS IPM trial site (Dr Stephen Quarrell, TIA)
  • PIPS3 – Soil Your Undies discussion (Michele Buntain, TIA)

Thursday 18 November, National Orchard Talk

The virtual National Orchard Talk will be broadcast across the country. Tune in to hear Craig Hornblow (AgFirst) and Nic Finger (Fruit Help) discuss using data to achieve fruit quality outcomes.

This will include guidance on

  • How to gather data as efficiently and accurately as possible
  • Managing the data you have
  • What data is the most valuable to collect, including
    • Hand thinning
    • Fruit sizing
    • Estimation
    • Water and nutrition

This will be followed by a live Q&A.

The WA Orchard Walk will take place at Ladycroft Orchard, Manjimup, featuring:

  • The virtual National Orchard Talk and Q&A
  • A local presentation on soil mapping to assess water needs (Andreas Neuhaus, CSBP Ltd)
  • An update on the WA PIPS3 – Soil Your Undies challenge

The Batlow Orchard Walk will take place at the Batlow RSL and a local orchard, featuring:

  • The virtual National Orchard Talk and Q&A
  • Local presentations on apple tree plantings and post-bushfire orchard recovery.

Thursday 18 November, Orange, NSW

The Orange Orchard Walk will take place at Orange Agricultural Institute, featuring:

  • The virtual National Orchard Talk and Q&A
  • Mite management and resistance to pesticides (Grant Herron and Duong Nguyen, NSW DPI)
  • PIPS3 IPM demonstration on encouraging beneficial insects

Growers can bring a sample of Two Spotted Mites with them to the meeting to have resistance to pesticides assessed at no cost.

Thursday 25 November, Northern Vic

The Northern Vic Orchard Walk will take place at the Tatura Smartfarm, featuring presentations and demonstrations on several PIPS3 project sites:

  • Intelligent orchards – data insights to improve productivity
  • Introduction to the Sundial Orchard at AgVic Tatura (Ian Goodwin)
  • How data can be used for management purposes; demonstration of the Green Atlas Cartographer (Alessio Scalisi)
  • Irrigation Technology
  • Rootstocks in the Sundial orchard and how they affect vigour (M9, B9 and M26) (Madeleine Peavey)
  • Interrow planting in pears to encourage beneficial insects (Greg Lefoe)

Friday 26 November, Southern Vic

The Southern Vic Orchard Walk will take place at Priest’s Orchard, Packenham.

  • Nic Finger and Paul Priest will lead a discussion on attaining high quality fruit from young trees and older Fuji on traditional and high density systems.  
  • There will be an opportunity to see the laser bird deterrent unit and the GreenAtlas Cartographer.
